Weekenders: Waco, TX

Texas, as anyone who lives here can attest to, is a massive place and you can easily drive for 10+ hours and never cross a State line. Weekends offer up a great opportunity for a getaway.

Earlier this year, Ben and I ventured up to Dallas, Texas to attend a concert and decided to stop in Waco along the way

Waco, a relatively small college town, is home to Magnolia Market at the Silos. Magnolia is the creation of Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s Fixer Upper. I’m a big fan of binge watching HGTV whenever possible and I’m a sucker for the Gaines family and all of the epic projects they work on. This was a trip I’d been wanting to make for a while and Ben reluctantly agreed to come along. Okay, he didn’t actually have a choice since we were both headed to Dallas but I like to think that he did it because he loves me.

Magnolia Farms is located just off IH 35 and was pretty easy to find. We parked and followed the crowds of people making their way to the entrance. I anticipated that it would be a bit crowded but I was shocked to see a line already wrapped around the Silos Baking Co. One couple told us that they had been in line for well over an hour.

We decided to skip the bakery and head straight for the mothership: Magnolia Market. The line was seemingly long (yes there was a line to get into the store) but it moved pretty quickly and within about 20 minutes I was surrounded by shiplap, succulents, and a thousand things that I didn’t know I needed (but definitely did). I’ll admit that I was a bit disappointed by how crowded it was. It was difficult to really take your time and shop around, something I would have liked considering that everything is pretty pricey. I settled on a small metal wall sign, a candle (that I have yet to light because it was almost $30- yikes), a baseball hat and a T-shirt. Overall I was pretty happy with my purchases and I do like that you can order online.

At this point we were ready to get out of the chaotic store and walked over to the courtyard area. I was surprised to find a half dozen or so food trucks scattered around a kids play area. One look at a crepe truck, I’d made my decision. Nutella and banana deliciousness in hand, we walked around a bit and snapped some pictures of an old Willy’s that Ben was pretty impressed with.

Overall I really enjoyed the Magnolia experience although next time I’d get there before it opened and plan to spend lots of time relaxing and trying out some of the different food trucks.

Have any of you ever made the trip to Waco/ Magnolia? Let me know in the comments!

How It Began

img_7320

It started how most great relationships start these days; with two bored people sitting in bed and left swiping 9 out of 10 potential hookups because “You look like you have 5 cats” and “Oh my God. Do you really go barefoot everywhere? Gross.”

And then you meet that one person who, yes, is still a little weird but they’re attractive and can hold a conversation pretty well so you decide that you have nothing better to do on a Tuesday night than go have Indian food and (eventually) fall head over heels in love.

2 years later we have three dogs, a house in Austin, Texas, a family gym membership (because that’s how you know it’s real) and some very broken in suitcases. It was on one of our trips that we began to play around with starting a blog.

Months of procrastination, arguments, differences of opinions, and one very expensive DSLR later, we’re excited to finally be able to share our blog with you. You can expect lots of travel posts,  his and hers fashion and lifestyle type things, and some pictures of our dogs thrown in for good measure.

This is Leashes & Layovers. We hope you enjoy it!
